Somatic Movement Workshops
The workshops are designed by Movement Analyst Caterina Fava, using the Laban/ Bartenieff Movement System, a powerful framework for studying body movement and a somatic practice aimed at enhancing self-awareness and overall well-being. Through immersive, embodied experiences, these workshops offer a unique way to explore complex educational themes. As part of the creative project I.D.E.E en Action, the workshops allow for the creative and original exploration of complex ideas related to social and ecological sustainability. Through movement experiences, theoretical concepts will be embodied and lived, actively engaging participants in a sensory way, while offering them a space for creation and innovation. The workshops will also be enriched by various artistic inspirations, such as paintings, photographs, poems, and literature. They will draw upon the toolkit developed during the first edition of I.D.E.E, which integrates the artistic and pedagogical resources explored and elaborated during that initial phase. The young people involved in these workshops will undergo an immersive experience through the body, allowing them to gain a deeper awareness of themselves and their inner world.
By engaging with different dimensions of movement—such as personal and relational space, the functionality of body parts, and dynamic expressions—the workshops aim to:
- Explore specific educational, artistic, environmental, and social themes through embodied knowledge.
- Develop body awareness by learning the language of movement.
- Promote physical and mental well-being by reintegrating speech and gesture, thought and action, body and mind.
- Enhance self-awareness by exploring the functional and expressive potential of the body in motion.
- Stimulate creativity and encourage personal and artistic expression.
- Strengthen soft skills such as collaboration, initiative, responsibility, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.
Laban/Bartenieff Movemen System (LBMS)
The Laban/Bartenieff Movement System is the culmination and ongoing development of the philosophy, theory and practice of Rudolf Laban and Irmgard Bartenieff. LBMS methodology incorporates a theoretical framework and clearly delineated language for describing movement. The system considers both functional as well as expressive content of actions. Human movement is generally examined in highly specialized contexts and not well understood as a larger body of knowledge. However, the phenomenon of human movement itself is our primary extension system and the basis of human comprehension and understanding. The process of perception is embodied, our experience is embodied, our knowing is embodied. LBMS provides a framework for delineating this foundational body of knowledge.
What can LBMS contribute to the field of education?
- An embodied knowledge and experiential learning experience
- Whole person education (self as psychological, physical, sociological, spiritual, etc.)
- Understanding of the relationships between Individual/Group/Society
- A perspective for both theory and practice
- Transformative experiences
- Using movement in education for a full range of content or subject-matter
- Teaching movement with a larger lens: dance, theatre fitness, health, community recreating
