As part of the IDÉE en Action initiative, GaiaLux together with partner organisation Kehsia, has been working with the S6 Sociology class at the European School Kirchberg in Luxembourg to explore Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) on gender equality. Over the past months, students have delved into the topics of gender-based violence, rape myths, and how to design effective advocacy campaigns as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence or Orange the World Campaign
In-Class Activities
Between October and January, GaiaLux and Khesia were invited to conduct presentations and workshops in the S6 Sociology class for the project Idee en Action. The sessions focused on gender equality, gender-based violence, rape myths and the importance of advocacy campaigns in raising awareness.
The activities centered around the UN 16 days of Activism. As gender inequality and gender-based violence continue to dominate both public debate and media headlines, empowering students through knowledge and open discussion is key to driving meaningful change and awareness.
First session: Led by Anna Sabadash (Gaialux), this introductory session focused on Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality). Students engaged in a short debate on abortion and gender stereotypes, encouraging critical reflection and respectful dialogue.
Second session: The next workshop explored the power of storytelling as a tool for advocacy. the session focused on introducing the Orange the World campaign by UN and Advocacy Campaigns in general. Students were invited to craft their own stories addressing gender inequality through an interactive game led by Chiara Crosio (Khesia).
Third session: The final workshop, led by postdoctoral researcher Salomé Lannier (University of Luxembourg), took a creative and interactive approach to examining rape myths. Through a combination of research insights and participatory discussion, students deepened their understanding of how misconceptions contribute to perpetuating gender-based violence.
Students were then encouraged to create their own campaigns on themes they cared deeply about. Working together, they developed creative ideas and discussed how their campaigns could be implemented in real life. Their efforts resulted in a collective poster showcasing all the campaigns now proudly displayed in the classroom. The final presentation of the 5 campaigns took place on the 9th of January and featured different topics that the students felt passionately about such as: gender inequality in the medical field, the gender pay gap, educational differences, gender stereotypes and the role of gender inequality in sports. In the coming months, the students will unveil their campaigns in honor of International Women’s Day.
The IDÉE Exhibition
For two weeks, the school’s main hall hosted the IDÉE Exhibition, a creative display of artworks inspired by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. At the opening event, GaiaLux introduced the IDÉE Project, with a special focus on SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Artists Frédérique Thiriart and Anna Barcia brought these themes to life through their work, while Jennifer Feschuk from the EU Climate Pact presented the initiative’s connection to European climate action. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions on the 2030 Agenda, the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement, and the vital role of youth in sustainability. Combining art, storytelling, and digital media, the exhibition offered an immersive and inspiring learning experience, joined by two young delegates from Luxembourg’s COP30 team.
